Wine history runs way back in Mexico. In fact, the first vitis vinifera planted in Napa Valley traces its roots to Coahilla, Mexico and the oldest vineyards in the Americas. Thanks to the later wine making efforts of the Jesuits in the Valle de Santo Tomas, south of Ensenada, and the Dominicans in the Valle de Guadalupe north of Ensenada, wine making was kept alive in Baja despite the mandates of the Spanish crown attempting to ban the production in order to protect the Spanish wine industry.
